Montpellier is, by its population, the 7ᵉ municipality of France and the 3ᵉ French city of the Mediterranean axis (after Marseille and Nice).

Its landscape is especially marked by the view of the pic-saint-Loup (658m) visible in many places, such as the Peyrou promenade and the roof terrace of the Corum at the end of the Esplanade alleys. The climate is typically Mediterranean. This is why Montpellier has one of the highest levels of sunshine in France, with more than 330 days of sunshine per year.

The historical center of Montpellier is called “l’Ecusson”.

It bears its name due to its shield shape (medieval shield). This historical centre is still strongly marked today by the Montpellier buildings as it has remained the heart of the city since the beginning of XIIIᵉ century.

With nearly 60 hectares, the historic centre of Montpellier is one of the largest pedestrian areas in Europe.
